At the Center: rematriation + rest + regeneration

  • Greer Avenue St. Louis, MO United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

From August 10-11, 2024, the vibrant city of St. Louis will host "At the Center: rematriation + rest + regeneration," a groundbreaking symposium dedicated to exploring healing, survival and joy in the arts. Organized by Dail Chambers and Sibyls Shrine, an art collective and residency program dedicated to uplifting Black artists who m/other, this event promises to be a transformative experience for participants and attendees alike.

Saint Louis, nestled in the heart of the United States, serves as the backdrop for this symposium, offering a rich tapestry of history and culture. Yet, it also grapples with profound social challenges such as redlining, food apartheid, and crime. In response, Sibyls Shrine member Dail Chambers emphasizes the urgent need for a "symposium of love, in the arts, to express the history, current condition and potential of a thriving community."

"At the Center" seeks to address these issues through a robust program of workshops, performances, and discussions. Participating artists will engage in a place-based inquiry, exploring the intersection of art, activism, and community revitalization.

Highlights include a lymph node clearance movement workshop led by organizer Dail Chambers; an aerial hoop performance combined with land and body work by Tiara Burtin; an inclusive soccer game designed for Black mothers, aunties, grandmas, and caregivers led by Naomi Chambers; a preparation workshop inspired by Octavia Butler's 'Parable of the Sower' facilitated by Jessica Gaynelle Moss; and the production of Sibyls Shrine founder Alisha B Wormsley's experimental film project, 'Children of Nan', which explores the survival strategies of Black and Indigenous femmes.

In acknowledgment of the wisdom and guidance of community Elders, "At the Center" will feature their prominent participation. These esteemed individuals will lead the program welcome and offer teach-in learning sessions, enriching the symposium with their invaluable insights and experiences.

"As an homage to the original priestesses of the African goddess Mami Wata, Sibyls Shrine seeks to empower artists to reclaim their divine status and creativity," says Sibyls Shrine Administrative Director Jessica Gaynelle Moss. "Through 'At the Center,' we hope to create a space for healing, joy, survival and collective transformation."

"At the Center: rematriation + rest + regeneration" is not just an event but a catalyst for ongoing dialogue and action. As St. Louis serves as the inaugural location, future expansions and explorations are anticipated, sparking conversations that transcend geographical boundaries.

About Sibyls Shrine: Founded by Alisha B Wormsley and developed with Jessica Gaynelle Moss in 2019, Sibyls Shrine is dedicated to uplifting Black artists who m/other by providing opportunities for radical care, rest, and support. Through a comprehensive resource framework that includes financial support, career development, skill-sharing, and access to arts and cultural institutions, Sibyls Shrine aims to address systemic barriers faced by Black artists who m/other.

Don't miss this chance to collaborate with Halima and Jonesse and turn your ideas into reality!

Halima Afi Cassells (b. 1981) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist rooted in Waawiiyaataanong/Detroit, MI. Raised in a creative environment, her childhood, documented through unsolicited murals and fashions by her parents, fueled her exploration. Embracing community as the essence of her practice, she transitioned from painting to utilizing natural, found, and up-cycled materials, inspired by her passion for gardening.

Through projects like the Free Market of Detroit, Cassells delves into relationship-building, freedom, and work within participatory contexts, inviting public engagement through interactive installations and upcycled fashion creations.

Recipient of the 2023 Kresge Arts in Detroit fellowship, Cassells explores interconnectedness, studying anthropology, economics, global corporatism, and psychology to foster a 'right relationship.' As an advocate for artists, she spearheads community processes to uplift cultural capital and collaborates across various international spaces.

Jonesse Davis is the creative force and compassionate spirit driving the essence of Heartwork Wellness. From the earliest stages of existence, creativity wove itself into the fabric of Jonesse’s being, offering a refuge for exploration, expression, and human connection.

From hands-on craftsmanship to construction and artistic creation, Jonesse's transformation from a theatrical special effects artist to a skilled dental technician provided invaluable skills and insights, but a thirst for authentic fulfillment remained. This thirst was quenched after discovering the power of art therapy, igniting a visionary quest to develop a space to share the profound connection between creativity, self-discovery, and holistic well-being.

Jonesse earned a master's degree in Art Therapy specializing in counseling. Beyond academic excellence, she is an art facilitator, and spends time visiting afterschool programs, shelters, and safe houses throughout the Greater Pittsburgh Region.

Heartwork Wellness is a testament to Jonesse's journey – one that threads together diverse talents, a profound appreciation for human connection, and a commitment to holistic betterment.

I work to create expansive, brave spaces where communities exist in dynamic fullness. At the center of my calling is the work to elevate the voices of those who stand in liminality: queer, Black, femme and disabled being first.
